Apple Serial Number Search
Police reports and insurance claims require the serial number. Unlike the IMEI (which is mobile-network specific), the Serial Number identifies the hardware unit itself. If a stolen Mac is taken to an Apple Store for repair, the technician runs a serial search which flags the device as "reported stolen" in Apple's internal GSX (Global Service Exchange) system.
