Before we explore the dubbing specifics, let’s revisit the story. Set thirty years after the original film, Blade Runner 2049 follows Officer K (Ryan Gosling), a new-generation Blade Runner working for the LAPD. He unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what remains of society into chaos. His discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former Blade Runner who has been missing for decades.
This paper examines the Tamil-dubbed version of Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049 (2017), focusing on linguistic adaptation, cultural transcreation, and audience reception among Tamil-speaking viewers. While the original film is dense with philosophical and noir elements, the dubbing process necessitates simplification, localization, and semantic shifts. Drawing on translation studies (Venuti, 1995) and dubbing theory (Chaume, 2012), this study analyzes key scenes from the Tamil dub, comparing them with the original English dialogue. Findings suggest that while the Tamil version retains the core plot, it loses much of the existential ambiguity, replacing it with more explicit emotional cues and action-oriented phrasing. The paper concludes by discussing how dubbing affects the perception of genre cinema in regional Indian markets. blade runner 2049 tamil dubbed
