Standard presets use a linear curve. Dreamy presets use an "S-Curve" that is flattened at the bottom left. By pulling the bottom-left anchor point up instead of leaving it at zero, you turn pure black into charcoal grey. This creates the signature "fade." lightroom preset soft and dreamy

Because you are reducing contrast and clarity, skin can sometimes look waxy. To fix this, after applying the preset, go to the panel and add Masking (hold Alt while dragging the Masking slider until only the edges are white).
